Al Ain University conclude the 16th Mediterranean Microwave Symposium (MMS2016)

 

Al Ain University concluded the 16th Mediterranean Microwave Symposium (MMS2016), organized in collaboration with IEEE, attended by Prof. Ghaleb Al Refae (AAU President), Prof. Abdulhafeed Belarabi (AAU Vice President), Dr. Nazih Khaddaj Mallat (Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology and General Chair of MMS2016) and various researchers coming from different local/regional/international academic institutions and companies. 

In addition to 5 talks provided by 5 prominent Keynote Speakers from Canada, The United States, and the United Kingdom, the conference technical program contained a total of 102 technical papers organized within 18 oral sessions that were spread over the three days of the conference. MMS2016 presentations were considered as an excellent occasion for the international academic community to present the latest developments and recent advances in relevant fields which include Microwave Engineering, RF Circuits and Systems, Antenna Technologies, Wireless Communications, and a broad range of High-Frequency topics such as Terahertz and Photonic Technologies. Besides the technical activities of the conference, there were two social activities scheduled (a city tour of Abu Dhabi, and a banquet/dinner where the awards were delivered).

From his side, Prof. Al Refae stressed on the keenness of Al Ain University to participate in the local and international conferences. He also added that embracing this conference will contribute to achieve the aim in strengthening the scientific research and innovation, which had the United Arab Emirates attention, stressing on the importance of following up the scientific research to achieve the university’s vision to create an advanced research culture as a development base. He added that AAU keen to develop the College of Engineering and Information Technology by providing all support which would raise the college and the university, emphasizing on the University's foundations that are compatible with the CAA standards in the Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs. 

On the other hand, Dr. Khaddaj Mallat was delighted to organize and host this conference, which adds a distinct imprint of AAU’s history in the field of organizing and hosting international and local conferences because of its keenness to strength relations with various academic institutions locally, regionally and internationally. He also conveyed his gratitude to all the sponsors of this conference for their supports and efforts: IEEE and some of its branches, Transco, Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau and Keysight Technologies / Motabaqah Trading Co, Organizing Committee, Technical Program Committee, Media Committee, all volunteers and all conference participants who played a critical role to ensure a great event, whishing them all further progress and success.

During the banquet of MMS2016, the MMS2016 Best Paper Award (sponsored by “Al Ain University”) was announced. The selection was for an original paper in the field of Microwave Communications and based on originality, utility, timeliness, and clarity of presentation. 

Moreover, “Yarman and Carlin” Best Graduate Student Paper Awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd ranked) were also delivered to young microwave engineers/scientist who presents the 3 best research papers in MMS2016.  

The awarded papers were selected by an award committee formed by the General Chair of the Symposium.
