ASCE Student Chapter Organizes Second Popsicle Bridge Competition
The ASCE Student Chapter, in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Program, organized the exciting Second Popsicle Bridge Competition at the Abu Dhabi Campus. The event brought together engineering students from both the Al Ain and Abu Dhabi campuses of Al Ain University, turning the campus into a vibrant hub of innovation, teamwork, and hands-on learning.
Open to all engineering disciplines, the competition celebrated creativity, structural thinking, and the engineering mindset. It was significant as it allowed students from various programs to experience the essence of civil engineering—translating design concepts into practical models and understanding how scientific principles shape real-world structures.
Participants were required to construct their bridges using only popsicle sticks and glue, applying design strategies and problem-solving skills within specific dimensional limits to ensure fairness and engineering accuracy. Each bridge was later subjected to a load test, and winners were selected based on the efficiency ratio (Load carried ÷ Bridge’s own weight)—a criterion that rewards both strength and smart, lightweight design.
The event was organized by the ASCE Student Chapter under the supervision of Faculty Advisor Eng. Esraa Hijah, as part of its ongoing initiatives to bring engineering theory to life through fun, interactive experiences. As one of the most active student organizations at AAU, the ASCE Student Chapter continues to play a vital role in enriching campus life, fostering a sense of community among students, and providing platforms that blend learning with enjoyment.
The Civil Engineering Program and the College of Engineering proudly support and encourage such initiatives, recognizing their value in enhancing student experience, building collaboration and leadership, and strengthening the connection between classroom learning and real-world engineering practice.
